Wednesday 26 November In the Old Assembly University of Oslo Norway Painted by artist Knut Andre Vikshåland Present were The Crown Haakon Magnus of Norway Speeches of Guri Hjeltnes (Director at HL center), Erwin Kohn, (Chairman and Board of the Jewish community) and Håkon Harket Nanna Segelcke took the podium. And not least, Samuel Steinmann himself. Arve Tellefsen and Vox Humana accounted for musical performances. The Crown Prince Regent had the opportunity to have a conversation with Steinmann in the aftermath of the event. |
Samuel Leon "Sammy" Steinmann (born 24 August 1923) is one of
the few Norwegian Jews who survived annihilation camp Auschwitz. After Julius Paltiel death on 7 March 2008 and his death LeVold 28th June 2009, he is the only living Jewish Norwegian who have survived the camp. Steinmann grew up on Nordstrand in Oslo. He was like a Jew a victim of Nazi attempt to exterminate the European Jews during WWII. He was arrested the fall of 1942 and in December the same year, he was deported with slave ship DS "Danube" to Auschwitz along with around 531 other Norwegian Jews. Samuel Stein Manns brother, Harry Steinmann, was killed shortly after arriving at the camp. Samuel Steinmann got the prisoner number 79 231. In January 1943, there were only ten Norwegian Jews left of the 530 who had been deported. In January 1945 forced evacuees SS Auschwitz when the Red Army invaded Poland. 66,000 Jewish prisoners were sent on death march. The Norwegian Jews who were part of this march was Samuel Steinmann, Julius Paltiel, Leo Eitinger, Assor Hirsch and Pelle Hirsch. The march went through the Czech Republic and inward in Germany to end up in Buchenwald. In March came the white buses to Buchenwald to retrieve Scandinavian prisoners, but Samuel Steinmann and the other four Norwegian Jews could not be there. They were first released by the Americans on April 11, after having cheated death again by stealing clothes with number of dead, non- Jewish prisoners. Samuel Steinmann live today in Oslo.
